The Canadian Progress Club, Durham Region Women have been working with Hearth Place for the past two years. Last year we supported and worked at the Children’s Christmas Party, and will be doing this event again on December 11, 2016, providing Christmas Gifts, wrapping gifts in the Secret Santa room, decorating cookies, Christmas ornaments, and providing other fun crafts. Hearth Place is a wonderful charity, and we look forward to our ongoing partnership.
Hearth Place was the inspiration of Carolyn Alexander who, after being diagnosed with Breast Cancer, wanted to create a centre that would address the social, practical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs of people dealing with all types of cancer and their family members and caregivers. After several years of planning, fundraising and developing the infrastructure, we were granted charitable status and opened our doors January 29, 1997. Since that time, Hearth Place has continued to develop new programs to best meet the needs of the members coming through the door.
Hearth Place offers many programs and services including emotional and wellness support, educational programs, presentations and seminars, as well as many adult and child programs. The centre is run by both staff and volunteers, committed to the well- being of families dealing with the difficult challenges of cancer.
The Canadian Progress Club, Durham Region Women took part in a recent fundraising event The Inside Ride hosted by Hearth Place. This event took place on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Enterprise Air Inc. hanger at the Oshawa Airport with airplanes beside us, and take-offs and landings in the background. Teams of 6 riders dressed up in team outfits took turns riding the stationary bikes, all while being cheered on by their teammates. Prizes were handed out for different awards and The Canadian Progress Club, Durham Region Women took second prize in the top team fundraiser category.
What a great day, and such a fun way to make some money for a very worthwhile charity!
