Halifax Cornwallis ladies believe in Community Service

From Halifax Citadel at Halifax, NS on 01/09/2016

As Chair of the Community Service Committee, I am so pleased with what we have accomplished in the past couple of years in terms of giving back to the community. We have 4 awesome ladies on the committee (Jackie Crouse, Wendy Webber, Nathalie Amirault and Tanya Ozard) who assist in many ways, such as finding community service activities, building relationships with a number of organizations, and tracking member hours. Some of the key volunteer opportunities that we assisted with include Habitat for Humanity, installing a playground for Chisholm House, helping out for Divas on the Green for Feed NS, Exile Island for Children’s Wish, Champions for Change for Phoenix, Superwalk for Parkinsons Canada, Truck Convoy for Special Olympics, cooking for the Phoenix shelter, Inspire Awards for Big Brothers Big Sisters among many other volunteer opportunities. We have also strengthened our networks and are recognized as having strong volunteer capabilities among many charitable organizations and the club is often approached to provide assistance. The club has developed 3” wide round Volunteer Buttons which also carry the club logo. We encourage our members to wear these when we volunteer.

One of our goals this year is to establish some longer term relationships with organizations which we also support financially, such as Chisholm House, HomeBridge Youth Society, Phoenix and Family SOS. Talks are currently underway and we are getting some positive feedback. We have already done some interior painting for Chisholm House and look forward to helping them out in other ways. Last year we logged 1167.50 hours of community service. That is 49 hours on average per person and we assisted with over 110 events. This year we hope to top 1200 hours! It really is a wonderful feeling when we see the results of our efforts in helping others and giving back!
