"It's Great to be Canadian!"

By Dani Hargarten

Since joining Progress in 1995, I have had the opportunity to be a part of, or witness to, events too numerous to mention that truly embody what it means to me to be a member of this great organization and to show pride in being Canadian. There are three instances that I would like to share that stand out as some of my most special memories.

October 1998:  Beacon Hill, Victoria, BC
To have been part of the group of Progressians unfurling that huge Canadian flag - too large to be just one piece in case anyone needs reminding - to me was a most unifying experience. To have members from East to West coast and places in between standing proud and showing their solidarity in working to make Canada a true leader of the world, exemplified the meaning of Progress.

September 2005:  Radisson Hotel, Saskatoon, SK
CPCF Luncheon - The most exiting and emotional twenty minutes any of us who were in attendance may ever experience (in public). Approaching the $1 million goal for SOC Endowment Fund and looking for an extra push, "Sprint to the Finish" was presented. In true Progess fashion, clubs and individuals alike again united to bring this dream to reality by showing generosity of not only their pockets but of spirit as well, in joining together for a common goal. WE DID IT - TOGETHER!

October 2007:  Oh Canada, eh?, Niagara Falls, ON
After being thoroughly entertained by a fabulously talented ensemble portraying all things Canadian, the entire group of 200 plus broke into a most heartfelt (and I must say "Best Performance by a Group") rendition of O Canada. I'm sure "Goose Bumps" rose on more arms than mine and I know at that moment "It's Great to be Canadian" resounded in the rafters of that theatre.

Each year upon returning home from our National Convention, I always share stories with my non-Progress friends, family and work associates. Every year has something special to offer and this year was certainly no exception. I only hope I am able to impart some of the feelings and atmosphere in my telling to create more interest in Progress. Maybe this will inspire other members to go out and share their experiences - you never know when something you tell someone might just click and have them say "I want to be part of that - how do I join?"

Many thanks, again, to the 2007 National Convention Committee for hosting our membership in beautiful Niagara Falls - it's like having your whole family together again!
