Calgary North Awards Dinner

By Wayne Evans, President
CPC Calgary North

"It's Great to be a Canadian / Soyons Fiers d'ętre Canadien"
Calgary North held a special meeting with members, spouses and invited guests on June 8, 2006. The highlights of the evening were the following:

  • Presenting a cheque to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary for $60,661

  • Report on the Larry Burney Memorial Fund

  • Awards presentation to our Progressian of the Year, New Progressian and Rookie of the Year

  • Inducting two new members and re-inducting a former member

Sharon Moore, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary, spoke thanking us for taking kids on the waiting list to football and baseball games, organizing the Christmas party and for our continued financial support. She wished to thank our club and the other clubs in Calgary who provide over 40% of the funding for the program.  (Shown at right:  Calgary North presents cheque to BBBS.)

The Little Brother of the Year, Eric, and his Big Brother, Kurt Gibb, spoke to us on the activities, fun and personal growth they have shared since being matched.

The Larry Burney Memorial Fund was established after the untimely death of our President on May 26, 2006. Numerous individuals made contributions to the Fund after the funeral. At the Western Region convention the Sergeant-at-Arms fines were contributed to the Fund and all clubs made commitments to also contribute. To date we have over $4,000 in the Fund. At the Big Brothers Big Sisters Christmas party Larry met a Little Brother with major visible physical challenges. Larry took a special interest in this exuberant young boy and wanted to help. This is what Larry was working on before his death. The Fund will be use to help this boy, with his mother’s permission. Liz Burney, Larry’s wife, praised the club for continuing the work he had started. Larry was proud to be a Progressian and Liz thanked us for carrying on his name.

We presented awards to the following:

Progressian of the Year -- Bill Brown
New Progressian -- Jeff Alderman
Rookie of the Year -- Tim Rogers

Past National President Wolfgang Juchem inducted our new members, Jody Fireman and Jeff Gabert, and re-inducted former member Larry Trockstad. This brings our active membership back to 15 members.
