In Memory of Don Andrews

Submitted by Dan Villeneuve

In late 2005, Mr. Don Andrews of Edmonton passed away after a courageous battle with cancer.  Don was a long-time and outstanding member of the St. Albert Canadian Progress Club, and was devoted to the advancement and best interests of various charities in the St. Albert and Edmonton communities.  He was a leader and very active in the various fundraising events initiated by the St. Albert Club.

As a tribute to his significant contributions over his many years of service, the St. Albert Progress Club initiated the “Don Andrews Outstanding Contributor of the Year Award” in his honour.  The award is to be presented to the person, business, or organization deemed to have made the most significant financial or in-kind contribution to the charitable efforts of the Club over the past year.

The first recipient of the award, as selected by the Club members, was Mr. Carmelo Rago of the Sorrentinos restaurant chain.  Mr. Rago has been very generous in supporting the Club’s various fundraising events over many years, and is a very deserved recipient of this award. Congratulations Carmelo!

Don’s widow Fran Andrews presented the award to Mr. Rago and his wife Stella at the Canadian Progress Club Charity Valentines dance held in February 2006. Congratulations Carmelo and Stella.
