Halloween in Hollywood

Submitted by Jeanette Fireman

The stars came out in force for the Calgary Eves inaugural Halloween in Hollywood ball. Vying for the spotlight were Dolly Parton, Elvis, Cruella DaVille, Beatlejuice, Cleopatra, the Phantom of the Opera, Zoro, Tin Man, Scarecrow, Johnny Dep, both Count Dracula and his brother the Arch Duke, and the Crown Prince of Darkness himself.

Lurking in the shadows many extras filled the roles of ghouls, goblins, vampires and witches. As if there weren’t enough monsters in the room late in the evening – Michael Jackson himself burst onto the dance floor as the sound of his hit Thriller rang through the hall.

Although not written in stone, a Hollywood Ball has to include an awards ceremony. Competition was strong this year. The award for best couple went to Scarecrow and Tin Man, and The Good Fairy took Best Original Costume. The biggest challenge to the judges was deciding Best Male and Best Female Costumes. Fortunately this year’s judges came prepared with tie breakers for contestants to participate in. Can Can Girl and Dolly Parton (in her wet t-shirt attire) participated in a dance-off to decide the winner of Best Female Costume. Even this did not help. They shared the prize!! Michael Jackson, Elvis, Johnny Dep and Beetlejuice also had to participate in a dance-off to decide Best Male Costume. This was another close competition. It appeared that the prize would be shared between Michael and Elvis when, in the dying seconds of the dance Elvis made a brilliant break dance type move that just can’t be described in words (you just had to be there – shame on you if you weren’t) and took the prize for best male costume.

An excellent event, which will be repeated next year!
