Greater Vancouver:  100 Minutes and Counting...

By Tim West

In early October 2004, the Greater Vancouver club was reviewing the Minutes from the previous meeting held 22 September when one of the members noticed something interesting ... at the top of the document was: “The ECHO #100”.  A round of applause followed for Hugh Tucker to acknowledge that he has generated Minutes for 100 meetings—a five-year relentless contribution!  That’s a lot of late nights and calloused keyboard-fingers to deliver an excellent reflection of Greater Vancouver’s business proceedings.

Hugh, pictured here, was born in BC though spent most of his youth in Alberta.  A stint in the Canadian Navy was followed by further education at the University of British Columbia.  Living in North Vancouver, Hugh got reacquainted with an old friend Wally Duncombe—a past president of CPC Calgary Downtown.  In January 1979, and supported by members of the original CPC Vancouver, the Greater Vancouver club was re-chartered.

Hugh, with a characteristically big heart and a wry sense of humour, has a long list of accomplishments and contributions to CPC and the community.  Here are some highlights:  The successful Van Raffle project and Colouring Book fundraiser, both lasting for 10 years; high involvement in support of Laurel House for autistic children, Small Talk Society for young children with learning disabilities; Champs child amputees; BC Special Olympics; UBC School of Audiology & Speech Sciences; and ticket sales/cashier/financial reporting at eight CPC Annual Ball Tournament fundraisers.

Hugh has also received several recognition awards including the Mercury Award, Quarter Century Award and the 2004 Bill Durrant Memorial Award for Excellence.  Hugh was Club President in 1991, and has contributed as a club director and for 20 of his 25 years at Progress.  100 Minutes and counting!

Thank you, Hugh.
