Regina Assiniboine shares
"Creativity and Culture"
with inner city children
Regina
Assiniboine adopted the “Creativity and Culture” inner city
after-school project last spring when it was threatened due to a lack of
grant funding. A steak night, corporate sponsorship, and personal
donations from Club members, provided for the nine week trip across
Canada, the theme chosen to reflect our work as The Canadian Progress
Club.
The weekly activities were organized and ran by the
Club’s community service chair with assistance from all club members
and many volunteers, including members of the University of Regina’s
Ladies Cougar Basketball team and The University of Regina Rams.
The project ran from October 7th to December 9th offering 149 children
the opportunity to experience Canadian arts, crafts, sports, music and
most importantly, food. Gifts of warm mitts, crayons for at home,
and donations of stickers, tattoos, pencils and more from the
Departments of Tourism from all across Canada added to the children’s
experience.
A special thank you to the Sherbrooke Club for
providing postcards at National Convention.
With a recent corporate donation from Mac’s
Convenience Stores, CPC Regina Assiniboine helped to re-start the
program in March. Another 200 children have since come out to
travel the world, visiting China, Mexico and Japan. A highlight of
our involvement with these special children was attending their school’s
Christmas concert where we were able to meet their parents and teachers
while sharing in the joy of the season and holding a wind-up barbecue
for more than forty little friends on May 4th—a day declared by one little boy “his
funnest day ever!” All Regina Assiniboine members heartily
agreed.
