Happy Birthday!

Toronto Downtown ... and Canadian Progress Club
by Alwyn McAllen

On Saturday, January 18th, CPC's first club, Toronto Downtown, celebrated its 80th birthday at The Old Scott House.  Attending the celebration were members past and present and a great time was had by all.

Past National Presidents from Toronto Downtown in attendance were Tom Merrick, Jules Beauregard and Alan Bone.

Past members in attendance were Norm Balfour, Art Waling, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Durant, Mr. and Mrs. Jules Beauregard, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Merrick, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Coffey, Mr. and Mrs. Jock Fleming and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Barlow.  It was great to share the company of Marg Stevens once again.

The evening was emceed by Alwyn McAllen who gave a brief overview of the history of Toronto Downtown and, indeed, Progress.  Each Director gave an update to the gathering of the current state of the club and the things we are involved in today. The highlight of the evening came when the past members regaled us with stories and memories of past club activities and National Conventions.  It certainly was a colourful experience for all.  I think if we hadn't stopped Tom Merrick we'd still be there!

President Alan Bone closed off the evening by thanking all for coming, particularly the past members and guests.  A special thanks goes to Ken Lloyd and Lee Mrkonjic who worked hard to bring the evening together.
