Halifax and Halifax-Cornwallis

Rockin' New Year's Eve 2002
By Sharon Ward

This fall, both the Halifax and the Halifax-Cornwallis clubs were knee-deep in planning their first annual New Year's Eve event.  This event was initiated in Calgary as many of you may know, and clubs across the country were encouraged to do the same.  It was a grand adventure.  Both clubs participated in the planning, and in particular, Judy Lavers, John Day, Allison Edwards, Greg Cole and Kermit Phillips brought it to a resounding success!

By early December, without even any publicity, it looked like the "Classic New Year's Eve" was going to be a sellout.  Well, fellow Progressians, it not only sold out, it over-sold (+/-350)!  I guess word got around that the Progress Club knows how to throw a party, because they came!  Even more important, it was a great time.  This reporter spoke with a few new friends that evening who were amazed at what a good time they were having.  When pressed for the single thing that they felt made it stand out from other events they had attended, the answer was "the people".  There was activity and friendly chatter everywhere, and once the band started to play, the dance floor was packed.  Many said they would be marking their calendars for next year.

Thank you Calgary, for the suggestion.  And to other clubs across the country: try it on for next year!

The numbers aren't in yet, but there will be significant dollars going to Bryony House (a shelter for battered women and children).

2003 Plans
The Halifax club is busy with arrangements for its Celebrity Dinner and Benefit Auction, the two major events held by the club this winter and spring. Halifax-Cornwallis is busy with a new event, a television auction on Eastlink cable, to be held in the spring, and the club is already underway with plans for Runaround in early June.
