Convention 2002

Update for April

The Countdown Continues…
The 2002 National Convention is less than 25 weeks away.  Are you all packed and ready to go?  Well, maybe it's too early yet to start packing, but it's not too early to start thinking about what you want to accomplish during Convention-besides fun and fellowship, that is!  Read on for what our Education Coordinator has planned to round out your Convention experience.

Programs & Seminars…
Thursday a.m.
The morning's General Session will feature Ruben Nelson, president of Square One Management Ltd. and The Alliance for Capitalizing on Change.  Mr. Nelson is one of Canada's pioneers of serious futures research.  Since 1960, he has had an active interest in our future and is one of Canada's few professional futurists.  He has spent his life exploring the many ways we, and our world, are changing.  He now believes deeply that if we are to sustain success in the unique conditions of the 21st Century, we must develop new mental maps of where we are in history; that the tacit understanding of our world and our culture can no longer lead us to the future we desire.  A much sought-after speaker and consultant, Mr. Nelson helps people "see the big picture and ask big questions".  His topic will be "Twenty-first Century Trends: Impacts on Volunteerism".

Thursday p.m.  Thursday afternoon will feature an Open Session with Sandy Penrose of the Banff Centre.  Ms. Penrose was formerly CEO and President of The Banff School of Advanced Management.  With over twenty years experience designing and delivering leadership and management programs, she draws on her experience in management and leadership roles with public and private sector organizations.  She is a strong proponent of life-long learning, which is creative, engaging, applied and relevant.  Her topic will be "Motivation in a Volunteer Setting".

Two Specialized Sessions will also be held on Thursday afternoon. Both are limited to 20 attendees.

Session One features Sherry Ferronato of Ex Amino Consulting who will present "Accountabilities in a Charitable Organization."  Ms. Ferronato's experiences with non-profit organizations and service clubs over the past twenty years have convinced her of the impressive impact that a small group of dedicated volunteer leaders can have.  She currently works in her own Calgary-based consulting practice, specializing in such areas as organizational, board and program development, mentoring, mergers and leadership.  Before establishing her consulting practice, she led Big Sisters & Big Brothers of Calgary and Area as a Co-Director and later as the Executive Director.  Her educational background is in Social Work.

Specialized Session Two will feature National Education Chair, Brenda Mahoney, who will deliver the topic, "Marketing Strategies".

Friday a.m.  Friday morning's General Session will feature Felicity Edwards of The CSE Group.  Ms. Edwards, M.Sc., M.A., has been involved in inter- and intra-group decision-making for two decades.  She has worked across the spectrum of organizations, including The World Business Council on Sustainable Development, the Government of Egypt, The Petroleum Authority of Thailand, and the Administrative Staff College in Hyderabad; and in a variety of countries, such as Europe (Germany, Holland and Switzerland), Asia (Thailand and India) and in Egypt.  She has also designed and developed professional development programs for executives and managers, both in the resource management field as well as executive management, including the Banff Centre.  Ms. Edwards will be presenting "Difficult People or Difficult Situations: The Closed Door Meeting."

Also held Friday morning, Specialized Session One once again features Sherry Ferronato.  Her topic will be "Financial Reporting: Considerations in a Charitable Organization."  Specialized Session Two will be a repeat session of Thursday's "Marketing Strategies" by National Education Chair, Brenda Mahoney.  Both Specialized Sessions are limited to 20 attendees.

(Please note: Due to insufficient enrollment, the Friday all-day Website Creation Lab at the Banff Centre has been cancelled. Deposits will be refunded.)
