Media Event 2002 for Calgary Progress Clubs

On Wednesday, March 6th, 2002 the Canadian Progress Clubs of Calgary hosted a lively media event on Global Television's - "Global News - Morning Edition".  This is the second year that we have held a Media Event.  This year in particular, we had an excellent opportunity to recap our year and celebrate our successes.  We were able to thank all our members who gave so much of their time and to make our presence known in Calgary.  The Media Event allowed us to inform Calgarians about what the Canadian Progress Club is and does for the community and various charities, and to illustrate our effectiveness in helping the Calgary community.  We were very fortunate that Global Television offers such a supportive forum for promoting groups like ours.

Angela Kokot, the on-site Global TV talk show host, ensured that all involved in the event had good fun while profiling many of the community service and charity events the eight Calgary clubs organize.  Although an early morning, the first TV segment at 6:15 a.m., had a highly animated group of volunteers.  They demonstrated Progress activities ranging from the Reindeer Doo Christmas Party (City Centre), the enthusiastic Caroling group (Bow River), to the countdown for the 2002 New Year's Party hosted by all clubs in the Alberta South Zone.  Fortunately, for all those in attendance, the subsequent TV segments were no less lively and left the attendees not only with a satisfying breakfast but also with many good laughs.

All attendees got a glimpse of the Doggie Doo Rodeo video that relayed the fun of the event.  The racing tricycles of the Rodeo Tricycle Races segment (Downtown Club) were a huge hit.  It seemed as though a few participants were enjoying it so much that the segment was only an excuse to race around the room on tricycles!  The Calgary Eves invited a group of young Irish dancers from the Regent School of Dance to perform and their quick rhythmic steps showed real talent.  The Uptown Club demonstrated their Spring Fling charity event by having boys and girls ("Littles") from Big Sisters & Big Brothers illustrate their talents in crafting neat hats.  Last but not least, we could not have had a Media Event without a segment of Stampede City's famous Elvis impersonators showing their slick moves and tunes, which promoted the Bowl For Kids event.

Four charities gave their thanks to the Canadian Progress Clubs of Calgary for their support and contributions - Christina Niedball from Big Sisters & Big Brothers; Anita Gateley from Feed the Hungary - Catholic Charities; Kim Veness from Operation Eyesight; and Brent Barootes from the Canadian Cancer Research Foundation - Alberta Chapter.

To complete the Media Event, Bruce Lyle, Zone Governor and Wolfgang Juchem, National VP for Western Region, made several congratulatory presentations.  Calgary's Mayor, David Bronconnier, participated in these presentations, which included recognition of one member from each Calgary Progress Club as Volunteer of the Year.  Bruce and Wolfgang then presented Calgary's Mayor with a cheque that totaled all donations in 2001 from all Calgary Progress Clubs to the various local charities.  We proudly presented a cheque for $756,000 but found that the actual total was closer to $850,000.

The local television stations and newspapers afforded our Media Event significant coverage.  Global TV alone provided us with 15 minutes of airtime on the "Global News Morning Edition" and televised our event during the noon and evening news. CFCN and A-Channel also televised our event on their newscasts, while reporters from the Calgary Herald and the Calgary Sun attended our event.  We hope to receive print coverage in one or both of these popular newspapers.

All in all, this was a very successful event due the participation of members and the great organization efforts of our committee.  Thank you again to all Calgary Progress Club members for their hard work and dedication in 2001 and for helping promote Progress to Calgary.
