Update
for February

Greetings
Fellow Progressians!
With only thirty-two weeks left until Convention, it's time
for an update from the organizing committee.
Arriving
in Calgary…
White Hatter hospitality is waiting to greet you at the
Calgary Airport. Conventioneers arriving by air are encouraged to look
for the friendly red-vested and white-hatted greeters who will direct
you to the designated airport hospitality room. There you can refresh
and relax while we coordinate your transportation to Canmore.
Extending
Your Stay…
If you have the opportunity, why not spend some time in
Calgary? Enjoy the city view from the Calgary Tower and have lunch in
the revolving Panorama Room. Visit Eau Claire Market, take in a film at
the IMAX theatre or explore the Chinese Cultural Centre. Study
natural-habitat wildlife enclaves, take a stroll through botanical
gardens or make a prehistoric journey through a dinosaur park, all at
the Calgary Zoo. These are just a few of the many local attractions
awaiting you. If you are planning an extended stay, Travel Alberta
attractions include guided air tours, trail rides, ice field helicopter
tours, fishing, golfing, Kananaskis Country adventures and much more.
For further information, check out the Convention 2002 website at www.cpcbowriver.com
for links to things to do in Calgary and area.
Destination
Canmore…
Name
that mountain!
This is one
of the most famous mountains that can be seen from Canmore. Can you name
it?
Did you
know…
For almost
a century, Canmore was one of the most important coal-mining centres in
southern Alberta - a town that grew to 3,000 salt-of-the-earth miners
and their families. When Canmore Mines Ltd. ceased coal productions on
July 13th, 1979, the town was the last coal-mining centre in the Bow
Valley to permanently shut its doors. There were real fears that Canmore
would become a ghost town, but the announcement in the early 1980s that
the mountain village would be the site of Nordic events for the 1988
Winter Olympics breathed new economic life into the beleaguered
community.
Since the
Olympics, Canmore has more than tripled its population from the
coal-mining days to almost 11,000 citizens. However, most of the
evidence that Canmore was a coal-mining town has disappeared.
Fortunately, the main developer on former mine land, Three Sisters
Resorts, has spent considerable financial and human resources in the
past decade to preserve and restore former mine structures and
artifacts. (Can you guess the name of the mountain yet?)
