New Year's Eve 2001: Calgary Style!

Black tie … or blue jeans?

For the Canadian Progress Clubs of Calgary it didn't matter. Guests at the Alberta South Zone's first-ever Stampede New Year's Eve party were encouraged to "Dress western - dress formal … it's all up to you!"

More than 470 people did just that, and turned out to ring in the New Year at the Westin Hotel, Calgary, in grand, eclectic and down-home style. The event, nicknamed the "Buckn' Bullshooter's Dogie Do" (a title inspired by the names of three popular Stampede events hosted by Calgary Progress Clubs) featured unlimited refreshments, a first-class dinner buffet, live entertainment and dancing. A cascade of balloons descended over the dance floor at the appointed hour and a frenzy of popping balloons and champagne corks provided the background score for enthusiastic well-wishers. The band was persuaded to play beyond their 1:00 a.m. curfew and, to the delight of the crowd, the celebrations continued into the wee hours.

Kudos to Alberta South Zone Governor Bruce Lyle for organizing what everyone in attendance is now calling a "keeper" event. Thanks also to those who contributed to the evening's success, including the Westin Hotel, The Costume Shoppe and Mardi Gras. Happy New Year!
