A Message from National President Al Gordon

Greetings … and I trust everyone had a good fill of haggis on Robbie Burns Night. If you’re saying ‘what the heck is he talking about?’ ask a member of your club who is of Scottish descent.

At the National Convention, your National Board committed to deliver to you, the membership, feedback on certain items. I will comment on each of these as an update now and there will be further info to follow on some of the topics.

As we read this, the second edition of the PROGRESSION On-line, we need to thank bulletin editor Brenda McBain for all her work putting it together; also a thanks to her area reporters. The first edition looked great so please be sure that you encourage all members in your clubs to check out this edition and to contribute to the next one.

The membership at the National Convention requested that the National Board investigate the feasibility of the “Power of One” as a National Fundraiser. The board appointed three people to gather info from the local organizing committee, and to report back to the board by December 15th in order for the Board to make a decision and report back to the National Membership in January 2002. The recommendation of your National Board is:  "As the organizing committee did not comply with the request to provide detailed information, the National Board has no information to continue support for the event [on a National level]. It must be assumed from the lack of detailed information, that this event has not yet reached the minimum standards to be supported on a National basis. Should the local organizing committee decide to continue the event, it should be on a local basis." I thank the people involved in assessing the event for the Board, as well I thank you, the local committee for the work they have put into it in the past.

We continue to work on the New Board Restructure, and plan to put some definitive structure in place at out National Board Meeting on February 2nd and 3rd. Unfortunately, communication within the National Executive has been hampered by computer viruses, which have cost us lost time and lost messages. We have not been able to keep the membership appraised of the developments on the re-structuring as we had planned. We intend to do better.

It would not be right if I did not speak to you about membership. In the last Progression I asked that each of you bring one new guest to your club. Did you do it yet? I urge you to spend some special time sourcing and inviting guests out. Now is the best time of the year for clubs to hold membership drives and information nights. Please don’t miss the opportunity. I ask you to not only bring out a guest but to hold your fellow club members accountable for bringing out guests as well. Ask at each meeting who will be bringing a guest to the next meeting. We are all working hard to re-build our membership but we need YOU to do your bit as well. Please make that extra effort.

It’s time to pack away the kilt and put on some green and party with the Irish on March 17th. (It’s a tough life.)

Yours for Progress,
Al Gordon
